I’ve just stumbled across another amazing Math Antics video, this time one on rounding. It’s brilliant. Not sure I can create one anywhere near this good but will continue trying. In the mean time, have a watch – hopefully it reinforces what we have done in class.
The focus this term has been place value. We have just begun to look at Gattegno chart patterns and what happens when we multiply by ten, one-hundred and one-thousand. It is vital that you all have a sound understanding of how our number system works, so the videos below have been chosen to help you. Feel free to blog any questions or comments.

Tonight, you took home a Gattegno place chart. It is named after the mathematician Caleb Gattegno. Your challenge over the weekend is to study the chart and ask yourself the following questions:
- What do you notice?
- What do you wonder?
- What is the same/different?
- What questions do you have?
Feel free to write on your sheet but do remember your presentation. Please only write in pencil or black pen. Feel free to post comments or questions on the blog too.
Here are some things that you can prepare for next week.
- Your writing challenge next week will be called: “My hero you’ve never heard of”. What is a hero? What makes somebody a hero? Who are your heroes and why? Who is a hero of yours that very few people have ever heard of? It could be a family member, a lesser-known sportsman, a YouTuber, an old actor. Just don’t choose anyone obvious! Write down your notes in your learning logs.
- Research the work on evolution carried out by English naturalist Charles Darwin in the nineteenth century. Who was he? What did he discover? Why is he an important historical figure? What were Darwin’s finches? Make some notes in your learning log.
- Look at the following website and video on decimal place value. Come in with any questions next week. These should be written in your learning log.

Some of you became Romans in your mathematical knowledge last week! It was great fun and extremely useful to investigate how another number system works. Now we are going to turn attention to the Hindu-Arabic system – the one that we use today.
Your Flipped Learning this week involves you playing with some big numbers. You need to do at least one of the following:
- Find out the population in five countries. Order the populations starting with the largest. Write the populations in digits and then in words. Explain how you ordered the countries and their populations.
- Do the same with the populations of five towns or cities.
- Capacities of five stadiums or concert venues.
- Transfer fees of five footballers.
- Amount of subscribers to your five favourite Youtubers.
- The number of views for five YouTube videos.
- The prices of five houses.
- Your top five scores in a game such as Templerun.
You should put your responses on the blog. Remember to follow guidelines for safe internet use and tell your parents when you are online.
