Planetarium

Today the National Space Centre in Leicester visited us, bringing with them a special blow-up planetarium. We had the chance to see planets and stars! Tell us what captured your imagination. What questions do you have about space?

  1. What really fascinated me was that all the stars and combinations were story’s all different story’s and how the sun is a medium size star but what really interested me was that the sun was the same size as other stars I wonder how much space it would take

Also I wonder how many stars there
are I bet a lot so if there’s a lot of
stars how big is the sky and how
does it turn night and day

Following on here are my questions
1 is there a easy way to remember plainets and how close they are

2 if there are stoms on some planets and not others

3 How high can space go up to

4 If bringing animals or humans into space out of one to 10 how much of a chance do they have of coming back 10 beinging yep and one being not a chance

I know it’s not a lot but underneath I will try to find some answers 😀

  2. My favourite part of the experience was when Kate, the person who teached the session, turned off all the lights and then all the consolations appeared. We saw memorable consolations such as Ryan’s belt, Leo the lion and the frying pan. With the help from Kate we could see the North star. Did you know when the earth spins around all the stars spin apart from the North star.

These are the questions I have about space:
Why does each planet have a moon?
How can there be iron in a planets?
Why is there weather on the planets?
Is there more than 1 galaxy?

I hope at some point we can all sit down and answer everyone’s questions that they have!

  3. I was mostly interested in the Venus and Neptune subject and also the Ancient
Greek stories about the constellations, and the thing I what to find out, is when the planets were discovered and the what they measure and how old the are they.

Did you know the Latin name for the Moon is Luna !!!

  4. I was really fascinated by all these mindblowing facts I didnt know there was a star called a death star in space I didnt know about it was made before the Mimas.

  5. My hilite is learning about veanuses, atmosfear and when we took it awey it looked like a lava flow. My question is why dose meamus look like the death star and why is the there planet storms if there is no wether

  6. I learnt that most plane after the were named after the roman gods like mars is named after the roman god of war. Also I learnt that we can only see Saturn’s ring because it has more ice than rock and dust and the light reflects of it.

Question: how many rovers have they sent to space?

  7. I found out that the sun is actually another star and you cant see the other ones becouse they are all from difrent galaxys and the sun is the closes star to earth. Also the only time you can see the stars is at night because the sun is on the other side of the earth and all stars are made from gas thats why there hot just like the sun.The sun is also a medium sized star they are some bigger and some smaller.

  8. wat i liket abalt the planetarium. I liket it when we lookt at all the stars and when we falnd out there is a star that looks like the deth star in star wors. When we was looking for the north star it was next to the big diper and when she span the stars aralnd the north star stayd in the same spase

  9. i found out that the death star looks like the moon called Mimas and i never new that venice is a dangerous place and we discovered water in mars.

Q.1.Is there any parts of life in any planet?

  10. I was really amazed by the North star that it doesn’t move. I was also impressed
    with Venus and Neptune.
    Here are my question
1.Is there one galaxy or more?
2.Is there more than 8 planets?
3.How do we know that the storms last for lot of years?
4.Do animals stay alive in space?

  11. My hillit is the story about the the bears in the stars and sent to the sky also geting to know about meamus looking like the deathstar. My question is why did the usa try to newke the MOON and my o ther question is why are the so meny moons on uranus (62 moons)

  12. I really liked the some of the plants because they where cool and I liked the moon and mars. I was also impressed with Venus and Neptune and the Ancient Greek
stories about the constellations .And Pluto is a Dwarf plants.

  13. I found out about that on jupita there is a storm that has been going on for 600 years and it has 63 moon’s wow my fravet bit was that you could get all pitchurs out of the stars and there was a moon that looks like the beth star frome star wars but tthe man that brow it he brow it before thay bescoved and there is 4 inportent moons and there is a planit that is coved in ice and they think there could be life on the planit.
I loved the part at the end when we got to loock at the stars and when we had to find the pitchurs in the stars and i found the bear and the crown and the arrow.

i also found out that veuns is a bangres planit because the heet go’s in but it boes’t come out so it’s like a green house but a lot hoter and if you put a rover on it and leav it there for an houer and a half it will melt and you should not go there because you can’t live there.

On mars they are thinking about sending an astronaut on mars in adout 30 years but they have sended a coupel of mars rover’s there.

We have 9 planits n our soler system and mercury is the smallest planit in our soler system and it is nown as the bwaf planit.

  14. My favourite was when Kate turned off the light, then we saw all the people and some animals and she was telling stories about some of then. I learnt that Jupiter
has 63 moons and the sun is a star. Did you know that the mars rovers
stay on mars for an hour. Mercury is one of the smallest planets in the universe
but Pluto is just smaller so Pluto is classed as a dwarf planet. Kate told us about a Greek story that was based on the bear, Ursa major, Ursa used to be a beautiful women that Zeus fell in love with but his wife turned her into a bear with jealousy. Did you know that there is a moon that looks like the death star and it lives in Jupiter

  15. How are planets develpt? we learnt that mars only has 5 moons.Did you know that there are invisbl rings around some planets.Did you know that know has been on mars.I learnt that jupter has 62 moons. our faveroit part was seeing the stars spin around.Jupter is 10 times the size as earth.people say that people are going to go up to mars in 20 years time.Did know earth is the 3 bigest plant ever. Our home planet earth is the 3rd planet from the sun and mars is the 4th.Jupter is the bigest planet out of the 8 planets.People used to look up at the stars and make pichers to entertan them selfs and family.Did you know that when you see a spoon sort of thing go up 3 stars you see the deth star.Stars are made out of gass.Because people never had tv the drow space pichers with the stars to injoy them selfs.

    • you would need to get good marks in GCSEs and do well in University. To go into space you will need oxygen, a space suit and some equipment to help you find your way back and to collect substances. This was down with Tyler M

    • you need a rokit and a spase soot, thay agsept pepol aralnd 153 and 190 centimeters, good grads, purfike iye site, you need to be between 27 and 37 year’s old, you need to be aboll to speek over langwijie, you need to be aboll to swim, sper oxajun.

  16. my highlight of the planetarian was when i found out that the jupiter was 63 and also if a astounaurts went onto it it would flaten them.

  17. There is round obout 100 billion to 200 billion galixies through out the universe.Neptune has 14 known moons in greek mitholigy, the largest by far is named triton,it was discoverd by William lassell on october 10, 1846,just 17 days after neptune was discoverd itself, over a century passed before the discovery of the second natural satllite, nereid. The moon orbiting farthest from its planet in the solar system is neptune’s nesco and has an orbital period of about 26 jullian years. A rocket ship,on its way to the moon, can get up to 25,000 miles per hour in order to get out of the earths atmosphere. However,it does not go that fast the whole way. Also, the ship cannot fly directly from the Earth straight to the moons surface. When it gets to the moon, the rocket needs to fly around and figure out a good spot to land. The first misson to stop on the moon with astronauts on it,apolla 11,landed about 4 days after leaving the earth surface.

  18. How does space have no weather ?
How many moons are there ?
    Jupiter
Jupiter has 63 moons, it’s the fifth planet from the sun, and it is a half times bigger then all the planets in the solar-system combined,
    The Sun
the sun is the star in the centre of our solar-system, the sun is 4.6 billion years old, it’s a yellow dwarf, and it’s surface temprechere is 5,500 degrease hot,
    Mars
Mars is the fourth planet from the sun, it’s the second smallest planet in the solar-system, mars has 2 moon s called phobio and daimios
    The moon
the moon is earth’s only natural satellite and was formed 4.6 billion years ago, around 30-50 million years after the solar-system was maid, the moon orbits around earth, surface temprechere is -233 degrees to 123 degrees

  19. es in the milkey way there are 100,000,000,000 stars.

es in the galixsy there are 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars

es in the univers there are 225,000,000,000 galixey

  20. My favourite part at the planetarium was when we were learning about Venus and we also got to see the surface and it wasn’t nice, people call it the angels planet because of the cloud around it. I learnt that if you see stars that make the shape of a saucepan get to the furthest part of the pot and go five stars up and then you see the north star. Did you know hat Jupiter is two and a half times bigger than all of the planets combined in size. Mercury is one of the smallest planets and it has a similar surface to the moon, it can also be seen but only in twilight. Saturn has many moons living inside it but one of them is called the Titan Moon. Kate was our teacher and she showed us Neptune and Neptune has a storm on it that has been going for hundreds to millions of years. We were told about Ursa major, one of the Greek stories about a women that was turned into a bear.

  21. I couldn’t believe that on some planets you could die instantly. on venus there is 3 ways to die
    1.the rain is acid.
2.you get squished in the atmosphere.
3.you get burned because its to hot.
on some planets there is volcanos and one volcano is three times bigger then mount Everest and there is storms going on for 100 200 600 years that’s a long time .The stars are the same as the sun they are just littler also the closets planet to the sun is mercury but its not actually not the hottest the hottest planet is venus and its 90 times greater then the planet earth and it has no moon.you cant see but if you find out some planets have 3 moons some have like 58 moons.
1.the sun is 4.5billion years old and its 110 times bigger then the earth
    2.eath is a 1 year old. it goes 29.8 km/s
I think that the biggest planet is Saturn the second biggest planet is Jupiter.
If you compare our planet to any other planet ours is tiny.
Did you know that you can buy stars and name them also you can buy parts of the moon so say if anything happened you could go live on the moon but you would have to have everything for the moon.
    hope you enjoyed!

  22. My favourite part was looking at the star and learding about North star. is the only star what dose’nt move why can it move like all star.My sesone favourite part was that we could make story out of star like Leo the lion

    What I learded
. That there 62 moons on Mars
.That there 63 moons on Jupiter
.That all planets have rings what dose’nt.Show but one can Saturn big rings around he
    Questions
.Do there have a west star?
    .Can dogs live in spaces?
.How you can cheak if space is self?
    .

  23. I leart venus is a dangerous planet because if you stand on it you will get:squished, burnt to death, and it rains acid. the stars make pictures and storys behind them. the smallest is mercury the second smallest is venus the 3rd is mars the 4th smallest is eath 5th neptune 6th is uranus 7th is jupiter 8th saturn.
    enjoy

  24. there are 7,428,004,200 living on earth
We know the Earth is rotating, but why? Why is it spinning?

Why is everything in the Solar System spinning? And why is it mostly all spinning in the same direction?

It can’t be a coincidence. Look down on the Earth from above, and you’d see that it’s turning in a counter-clockwise direction. Same with the Sun, Mars and most of the planets.

  25. I didn’t know venues was dangerous planet. What is the biggest planet ? some one left a family picture on the moon. The moon and the Earth have been to gave
    4.5 billion

  26. to be a astronart you need to reaserch, studdy, universty, drinkwater need to get a space sute, oxegan tank, rocet, space craft.and by kieran.w and tyler.l

  27. The planetarium was amazing I learnt many things including the order of the planets from the sun. Mercury is the first planet from the sun also Mercury’s layered surface is created by asteroids crashing into it. Venus is the second planet from the sun and in mythology people believed it is a planet of angels or dinosaurs. Earth is the third planet from the sun and its the only planet with a suitable sized life form on it. The moon is not classed as a planet but it can help Earth for example it creates waves and sometimes it changes the weather. Mars is the fourth planet from the sun in a battle between the Greek and the Romans, the god of the romans killed the Greek god of war then Mars the Roman god of war got his own planet. Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun and the largest of the gas planets. Saturn is the six planet from the sun and the only planet with seable rings. Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun it is also known as the lazy planet because it rotates the wrong way. Neptune the eighth planet from the sun has a dimple like storm that has been on for over a thousand years.
The stars are flaming balls of gas they can be the size of a planet or bigger than the sun. Stars can make shapes in a story a beauteous lady gets turned into a bear because Zou`s thought this lady was more dashing than his wife so his wife decided to curse her. Over 20 years later her son a hunter who forgot his mother was a bear as soon as he drew his bow, Zou`s turned her sun into a bear as well then he lifted them into heaven.
    1. Why is Earth the only planet with lifeforms on it?
    2. Who created the universe or what?
    3. When was the universe created?
    4. How long did it take for the Earth to form?
    5. Why does Earth spin?
Pluto has now drifted out of the solar system because a huge planet or star is pulling it closer , I think it’s not one planet I think it could be five or more!

  28. Learning Russian is the hardest part of astronaut training because all of the people on the space staition arec Russian.Beth healey thinks the hadest part of astronout is being away from her familly and friends.

  29. I didn’t know that some planets had wholes and they have been there for 100 s of years . how long have planets been in space for? how many planets are there? I didn’t know that there is dangerous planets around. how are planets made ?
Saturn is the biggest planet and Jupiter is the second biggest .
I learnt that venus is full of lavar and there is a few volcanos.

  30. Mars was the Roman god of war and agriculture. It may not seem like these two things go together, but they do. Mars protected those who fought for their communities, and stayed home to raise crops for food. In Greek, Mars was known as Ares.

    The Planet
Like Jupiter and Saturn, Uranus is a gas giant. But Uranus is a little different. Unlike all the other planets and most of the moons in our Solar System, Uranus spins on its side. It is believed that long ago a very large object smashed into this planet. The crash was so powerful that it completely changed the direction of Uranus’ planetary rotation. However, a more recent theory is that the extreme tilt of Uranus’ axis may have been caused by a large moon that was slowly pulled away from the planet by another large planet long ago when our Solar System was still new. It is thought that the gravitational pull of this moon moving away from Uranus may have caused it to tilt on its side.
Like Saturn, the thick atmosphere of Uranus is made up of methane, hydrogen and helium. But Uranus is an extremely cold planet. It has been called the “ice giant.” It is believed that Uranus is made up of rock and ice and has a large rocky core. Because of the tremendous planetary pressure of Uranus, there could possibly be trillions of large diamonds in or on the surface of this planet.

Scientists also believe that on the surface of Uranus there may be a huge ocean. And, interestingly, it is thought that the temperature of this ocean may be extremely hot, maybe even as hot as 5000 degrees Fahrenheit (2760 Celsius).

Uranus is almost identical to the planet Neptune.

    The Planet
For many, centuries people did not know that this planet even existed. It was discovered by Johann Galle and Heinrich D’Arrest in 1846.
Neptune is the smallest of the four gas giants in our Solar System. Much like Saturn and Uranus, Neptune’s atmosphere contains hydrogen, helium and methane.

Not much was known about Neptune until it was visited by the spacecraft Voyager 2 on August 25, 1989. Voyager 2 took many pictures of the planet, and much of what we know today about Neptune came from this single visit. These pictures show a brilliant blue planet with a few thin white clouds laced around its surface.

In Neptune’s atmosphere, there is a large white cloud that moves around rather quickly. The “scooting” of this cloud around the atmosphere has led it to be named “Scooter.”

When Voyager 2 visited Neptune, its pictures showed a giant storm much like the storm on Jupiter. This storm is called the “Great Dark Spot” because it appears as a dark oval shape on the surface of the planet. We do not know how long this storm has been active or if it is still present. More recently, the Hubble Space Telescope sent pictures back to Earth and there was no sign of the Great Dark Spot. These pictures did show two other dark spots that eventually faded away.

Neptune is a very windy place. No other planet in the Solar System has winds that are as strong as Neptune’s. The winds near the Great Dark Spot were believed to have reached nearly 1,200 miles per hour (approx 1931 km per hour). Perhaps this extremely windy atmosphere contributes to the appearance and disappearance of the great dark spots.

    Rings
Neptune has six rings which circle the planet. These rings are believed to be fairly new. The rings are more irregular than the rings of other planets. There are areas of varying thickness throughout the rings.

    Moons:
Neptune has 13 moons that we know of. Because Neptune is so far away, it is difficult to see any of these worlds. There are probably many more moons orbiting this blue planet which we have not yet discovered. Perhaps you will be the astronomer who discovers some of these worlds. The first moon to be discovered was Triton. Triton was discovered by an amateur astronomer in England named William Lassell only 17 days after Neptune was discovered in 1846. The names of the other moons are: Despina, Galatea, Halimede, Laomedeia, Larissa, Naiad, Nereid, Neso, Proteus, Psamathe, Sao, and Thalassa.

    The Dwarf Planet
Pluto was the only planet to be named by a kid. After the planet was discovered in 1930, an 11-year-old girl who lived in Oxford, England, by the name of Venetia Burney, suggested that this new planet needed to be named after the Roman god of the underworld. Venetia’s grandfather sent this suggestion to the Lowell Observatory and the name was accepted.
Pluto is smaller than 7 of the moons in the Solar System. It is about two-thirds smaller than Earth’s moon. Because it is so small, many scientists don’t consider it a planet at all. In 1999, a group of scientists attempted to re-classify Pluto as a comet. On August 24, 2006, Pluto’s status was officially changed from planet to dwarf planet. For decades, children have been taught in school that there are nine planets in our Solar System. However, with this change, there are now only eight planets. Also because of this change, there is a new category of small planets known as plutoids.

The Hubble Space Telescope has provided the clearest images yet of this dwarf planet for scientists to study. Studies of Pluto and its moon are still being conducted today with the Hubble Space Telescope. However, little is still known about Pluto and its moons because it is so far away.

    Moons:
Pluto has 4 moons. The largest is named Charon. Charon is only slightly smaller than its parent Pluto. For this reason, Pluto and Charon are often called a double planet system. The Earth and its moon, Luna, are sometimes considered double planets. Pluto’s two other moons are called Hydra and Nix. The newest moon, only recently discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope in the summer of 2011, is temporarily named P4. It is located between the orbits of Nix and Hydra.

    The Planet
In many ways, Saturn is similar to Jupiter, but it is much smaller. It is the second largest planet in our Solar System and it is a gas giant like Jupiter. Under the clouds of methane, hydrogen and helium, the sky gradually turns into liquid until it becomes a giant ocean of liquid chemicals.
Saturn is the least dense planet in our Solar System. It is made up of mostly hydrogen and helium, which are the two lightest elements in the universe and thus make Saturn the lightest planet that we know of. This is why you wouldn’t weigh as much on Saturn as you think you would because of its size. And because Saturn is so light, it does not have as much gravity. Interestingly, it is believed Saturn would actually be able to float in water because the hydrogen and helium that make up the planet are so lightweight.

Because Saturn is such a lightweight planet and it spins so fast, Saturn is not perfectly round like most of the other planets. Like Jupiter, Saturn is wider in the middle and more narrow near its top and bottom.

  31. I am really Intrested in space more than usual I like It now and I am going to start reading space books and read about space on the internet.Did you know you need a very good grade and go on your, A levels plus get a good education and have dedication, commitment, perseverance and be brave enough to be In space because you wanted to go to space and expore the universe for a living so It will be a very good time

  32. Did you know Laika was a stray and was picked up on the streets of Moscow 1 week after the rocket was set to launch

  33. Venus is called are sister planet because is about the same size as earth but nowhere near the same features first of all it rains aside and the floor is like laver and its atmosphere is so thick you would get crushed in a matter of seconds , this is all because it has ran out of oxidant and now just produces more and more carbon oxide.

Q1: how many white dwarfs have been found?

Q2: how many galaxy’s have been found?

  34. I find out that earth is far away from the sun than mars because I saw the sola system that said earth is the far awaythan mars and what is the earth Better Than Mars and how does the earth moves away from the sun it means it will be colder

  35. Venus facts

Venus is called are sister planet because is about the same size as earth but nowhere near the same features first of all it rains Venus
aside and the floor is like laver and its atmosphere is so thick you would get crushed in a matter of seconds , this is all because it has ran out of oxidant and now just produces more and more carbon oxide.

Q2: how many galaxy’s have been found?

  36. mars is the red planit and on mars thay hav just dscoverd water. One day in 30 years time we will go to mars but at the minit we can only send rovers.

  37. I really loved learning about Mars It is my favourite planet In the universe It Is worth learning about Its a good place I think you should discover this pleasant terrific large place there are a load of organisms In Mars and a load of other dazzling planets In this exquisite area.

  38. my favourite part of that day was when the lady showed us all the types of constellations that there was my favourite one was the lion it felt really exiting
to know about all the types of planets
